Methods for the Disposal of a Dead Fish
The worst part of
having a pet is its shorter lifespan and the cute little companion parts with us
after a few years of happiness. It is applicable for our aquatic buddies too.
Many aquarists seem confused
about the right way of disposal after grieving for their pet fish. Along with
the care guide of the aquarium fish, you need to know the correct way of their
disposal, too, so that the environment does not get harmed.
Respectful Disposal
Aquarists consider
their pet fish as their family members, and they want to dispose of its remains
most respectfully.
At present, there are
multiple ways of disposal of a dead fish, like flushing it down the toilet or throwing
it in the trash or keeping it at an open place so that animals can eat it.
However, these are not the preferred ways for the aquarists. Flushing is
considered illegal in some places too.
Most of the aquarists
take the dead fish to the doctors for advice regarding the place of cremation
or burial. Alternatively, some aquarists often choose to bury the fish in their
own house. The way of disposal depends on the mentality of aquarists. Some
prefer economical ways, and some others prefer respectful disposal.
Burying is considered
the most respectful way of saying goodbye to your aquatic pet. If it is your
preferred method too, but you are confused about how to conduct this, you can
follow these steps:
Observe and Remove the Fish
You are previously
observing in case the fish was suffering from any disease. Else, you need to
observe to confirm its death as some fish may act. Once confirmed, immediately
remove the fish to protect others in the tank. It will be better if you can
remove the whole fish with a single attempt as sometimes, shortly after death,
the fins split. You will need to remove the parts from water too.
Preserve the Fish
Keep the fish in a
paper bag to get some time to arrange disposal. You can preserve the dead fish
by placing the paper bag in the freezer to protect the body from rotting. It
will allow you some time to identify where (in your own home or pet cemetery)
you can bury your pet.
Prepare Burial
At present several
environment-friendly caskets are available which come in different sizes and
offer a seed to plant in memory of your loving fish. You will get these at the
stores and online.
Grave of the fish can
be 10-20” deep to prevent street animals from digging the soil and eating the
dead fish.
If these caskets are
not available, you can bury the fish in a Ziploc bag. However, these bags take
much time to decompose, so you can bury the fish right after taking it out from
the freezer. You can plant a seed as well.
Some aquarists prefer
to build a special monument with a special message written on it. But it is
optional.
Taste Water and Make Necessary
Changes for Other Fish
Maybe the fish died
because of some mismatches in aquarium water. So a water test and making some
changes can save the lives of others. You can change the water, filter clean,
or gravel vacuum to remove toxins of the dead fish right then. Alternatively, you
can apply probiotic bacteria supplement too for the healthy upbringing of other
fish.
It may sound sad, but
if the dead fish was shoaling one and the tank mates were of similar ages, and if
the cause of death is its age, some others may die soon. It’s your responsibility
to dispose of them in the right way.
